Free PSCAD Resources

This example demonstrates a PSCAD custom component that exchanges data with an external Fortran routine. The component accepts a real value through an input port and an integer value through a component parameter.

The resulting real value is then returned to PSCAD through the custom component and plotted in the simulation.

This is not a single PSCAD example, but an evolving collection of custom components I have developed for my own projects, testing, and general experimentation. I will continue to refine existing components and add new ones over time as the library grows.

The collection includes logic blocks, meters, displays, and a variety of miscellaneous tools ranging from genuinely useful to occasionally questionable. The goal is to provide practical building blocks that can be reused, modified, or simply explored to better understand custom component development in PSCAD.

This example demonstrates how Python can be used with the mhi.pscad library to modify component values within a PSCAD project. The script connects to PSCAD, locates selected components, and programmatically changes the values of both real and integer constant components.

It provides a simple introduction to PSCAD automation with Python and shows how model parameters can be updated without manually editing the project. The same approach can be extended to more advanced automation tasks such as parameter sweeps, batch simulations, model configuration, and repetitive study workflows.

This example demonstrates how to build a custom integrator in PSCAD using Fortran code and EMTDC storage variables. The component integrates an input signal using a specified time constant, initial condition, and upper and lower output limits.

The implementation uses trapezoidal integration allowing its numerical behavior to match PSCAD’s Master Library integrator. It also demonstrates how previous time step values are stored and used within a custom PSCAD component.

This example compares five commonly used filters from the PSCAD Master Library, such as the Real Pole and Differential Pole filters, with equivalent open model implementations. The filters are presented in the Master Library using Laplace domain transfer functions, which provide a convenient and compact way of expressing their mathematical behaviour.

The open models reproduce the same filter equations using transparent PSCAD and EMTDC implementations. Their outputs are compared directly with the corresponding Master Library filters to demonstrate equivalent behaviour while providing full visibility into how each filter is implemented.

This example demonstrates the stability of a PI controlled system using a simple second order plant. Changing the Ki value of the integrator can make the closed loop system either stable or unstable. As Ki is reduced, the integral action becomes stronger and the response becomes increasingly oscillatory. The example demonstrates the transition from a damped response to sustained oscillations and eventually to growing instability.

This example builds on the previous PI Controller Play example. Here, we do not know what the transfer function of the plant is. (You can look inside the plant page module, but wait until the end.. treat it as a black box). The goal of this example is to tune the PI controller without knowing the details of the plant.

This example provides a modular EMT model of data center loads supplied by a centralized UPS. It includes power electronic converters, IT workload profiles, and motor-driven cooling loads. Average, switching, and reduced-order converter models support studies of internal control interactions, data center-grid coupling, and workload power propagation. Two cases demonstrate a complete data center model and comparisons between modeling fidelity levels.

This PSCAD case models for key data center components, including power supply units, IT server racks, AC UPS systems, and gas turbine generators. It includes example grid connected and off grid data center configurations for studying converter interactions, disturbances, and grid reliability impacts.

This library provides EMT models for studying the grid behavior of large data centers, including UPS systems, power factor correction converters, DC to DC converters, inverters, cooling systems, and backup generation. The models are intended for investigating data center ride through performance, oscillations, stability, and other grid interaction phenomena.

This PSCAD model represents a DFIG based wind farm connected to the grid through a series compensated 500 kV transmission line and is intended for studying subsynchronous oscillations. It demonstrates how interactions between the DFIG rotor side converter, stator inductance, and series compensation can lead to unstable subsynchronous control interaction, with sensitivity to wind speed, turbine count, compensation level, and converter control gains.

This example implements a generic single-phase battery system in PSCAD and explains the purpose, parameters, and expected behaviour of its main modules.
